Sobhan Babu Biography

Sobhan Babu was a very popular hero of Telugu cinema in the 1960’s and 1970’s. As an outstanding actor, he has received 5 Nandi Awards and Filmfare awards each for Best Actor category. He received the Rashtrapati Award in acting 1966 for the movie, Bangaru Panjaram. The movie also won state award and Filmfare for best movie the same year. Daivabalam (1959) was his debut movie. However Bhakta Sabari was his first release. Sobhan Babu appeared in 230 movies between 1959 and 1996. Among these, he played the lead hero role in almost 200 movies, thus establishing him as a star of Telugu cinema. This actor passed away in 2008, aged 71. He had already taken retirement from film industry in 2006.

 

He was born in Krishna district in 1937. He did his primary studies from Kuntamukkula Mylavaram. After graduation though he pursued LLB at Chennai, he couldn’t complete it. He got married in 1958 and made his film debut the following year. He played bit roles in numerous movies till 1965. He mostly appeared in the movies of N. T. Rama Rao. Veerabhimanyu (1965) was his first movie as a "solo hero" and it was a commercial hit. Yet he continued playing supporting roles in movies, till he got the big break in the form of ‘Manushulu Marali’ in 1969, where he was paired opposite Sharada and Kanchana. There was no turning back.

 

He later appeared in over 200 movies in lead hero role and bagged 5 Filmfare and Nandi awards each. He was at the peak of his career when he won three consecutive Filmfare awards between 1974-1976 for the movies, Khaidi Babayi, Jeevana Jyothi and Soggadu, which is still a record in Telugu cinema. He won it for the last time in 1979 for the movie, Karthika Deepam. Jeevana Jyothi (1975), Sharada (1973),     Kaalam Marindi (1972), Chelleli Kapuram (1971) and Manushulu Marali (1969) are the movies for which he earned state awards.
