Sis Ram Ola Biography

Sis Ram Ola was a politician of Indian National Congress and Minister of Labour and Employment in Manmohan Singh’s cabinet. He served during the period 17 June 2013 – 15 December 2013 and died on December 15, 2013 as a result of a cardiac complaint. He died at Gurgaon after a prolonged illness. He was 86. Sis Ram Ola is the recipient of the Padma Shri award in 1968 for social work. He was married to Shiv Bai Ola and the couple had three children.

 

Earlier he has served as Minister of Mines during the period, 27 November 2004 – 22 May 2009 and Minister of Labour and Employment for a short period of 23 May 2004 – 27 November 2004, both under Dr. Manmohan Singh's government. He has also served as Union Minister of State for Chemicals and Fertilizers (Independent Charge) during the period 1996-1997 and Union Minister of State for Water resources (Independent Charge) during the period, 1997-1998. He was an influential Jat leader from Rajastan.

 

Sis Ram Ola was born on 30 July 1927 in Jhunjhunu, Rajasthan. He served India in military for a short period before entering social work and politics. Ola started a girls’ school, Indira Gandhi Balika Niketan, in his native village Ardawata in 1952. There were only 3 students when he started this school. His second son, Surjeet, runs the school now.

 

He was a member of the Rajasthan Legislative Assembly from 1957 to 1990. From 1980 to 1990 he was a cabinet minister in the Government of Rajasthan. Mr. Ola was an influential Jat leader hailing from the Shekhawati region of Rajasthan. He was appointed Cabinet Minister in June 2013, with political aims to gain seats in the Rajasthan Assembly elections. He played a key role in the distribution of tickets in the Shekhawati region and faced allegations of ignoring several strong contenders. It resulted in the defeat of Congress in Assembly elections as well.
