Simi Garewal Biography

Simi Garewal is a successful film actress and television host. She is popular with the television talk show Rendezvous with Simi Garewal, where she interviewed celebrities related to entertainment world, particularly Bollywood. As a film actress, her most memorable role is the negative character of Subhash Ghai’s blockbuster hit, Karz (1980). Do Badan, Chalte Chalte, Saathi, Mera Naam Joker and Siddhartha are other memorable movies.

 
Simi Garewal was born in Delhi as the daughter of an army officer. She was brought up in London. She studied at Newland House School with her sister Amrita. In the teens, she returned to India. Her easiness with English helped her to get a role in the English movie, Tarzan Goes to India. Garewal made her debut alongside Feroz Khan in this film in 1962 at the age of 15. Later she appeared in many movies, particularly in modern roles. She played the role of Rishi Kapoor’s teacher in Mera Naam Joker and this movie was bit controversial for its semi-nude scene. Siddhartha, an English-language movie was also controversial in India for a semi-nude scene. She played lead role opposite Shashi Kapoor in this movie.

Throughout her career she got opportunity to work with leading directors of the time. Raj Kapoor in Mera Naam Joker (1970), Satyajit Ray in Aranyer Din Ratri, Mrinal Sen in Padatik and Raj Khosla in Do Badan belong to this category. She also made a special appearance in Yash Chopra’s Kabhi Kabhi. Chalte chalte is one of her most memorable performances.

During 1980’s, she turned her direction towards writing and direction. She formed Siga Arts International Company. It's a Woman's World (1983) for Doordarshan and Living Legend Raj Kapoor (1984), a documentary film for BBC are other works.  She wrote and directed a Hindi feature film Rukhsat and has also done a few commercials. ‘Rendezvous with Simi Garewal’ is one of the prestigious talk shows on Indian television with wide viewership.
