Sikkil R. Bhaskaran Biography

Sikkil R. Bhaskaran is a noted violinist of Carnatic music belonging to Nagapattinam in Thanjavur District. He was born into the musical Isai Velalar family of Tamil Nadu. He is the recipient of the Youngest of Vidwan Award by Chennai Music Academy. "Villisai Vender" by Sri Kanchi Kamakotti Peetam, "Violin Isai Chelvam" title by Chennai Muthamizh Peravai and "Asthana Vidwan" by Sri Kanchi Kamakotti Peetam are the major titles received by him. He is also a recipient of prestigious Kalaimamani title was given by Tamil Nadu Iyal Isai Nataka Manram, government of Tamil Nadu. He is a disciple of Mayuram Govindaraja Pillai. Now Bhaskaran performs with third generation of Carnatic artists.

 

Sikkil R. Bhaskaran was born on 4 May 1936 in Sikkal, Tamil Nadu. He was introduced to the world of music by his maternal grandfather Sri Sikkal Ramaswami Pillai. He started learning violin at the age of 11 from Thiruvarur Sri Subba Iyer and later trained under famous Mayuram Govindaraja Pillai. He gave his first public performance at the age of 15 and since then he regularly appeared in music concerts accompanying many leading Carnatic singers. Chitoor Subramania Pillai, T. R. Mahalingam, Chembai Vaidyanatha Bhagavather and Semmangudi Sri Srinivasa Iyer are among those leading names with whom he has performed. He has also performed with many leading names belonging to three different generations.

 

He served as Station Artist in Chennai Radio Station from 1976 to 1994 for 2 decades and is an ‘A-grade’ artist of AIR. He also served as Executive committee member in Tiruvaiyaru Thyaga Brahma Festival Committee for about 2 decades.
