Sikandar Lodi Biography

Sikandar Lodi was a Sultan of Delhi who ruled the empire during the period - 1489 to 1517.He was also known as a Persian poet who prepared a diwan of 9000 verses. He used the pen name – Gulrukhi. He assumed the power soon after the death of his father, Bahlul Khan. Known as an excellent administrator he was the ruler of Lodi dynasty, whose kingdom included parts of northern India, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province of present day Pakistan and Punjab. He reconstructed the top two storeys of the famous QutubMinar. His son Ibrahim Lodi was the last ruler of Lodi dynasty, who got defeated in the historic battle of Panipat in 1526 by Babar, marking the glorious beginning of Mughal Empire.His son could not match with his talents and he had to face rebellions from both the extremes of his kingdom. 


Sikandar was the son of Sultan Bahlul Khan Lodi and BibiAmbha and was of Pashtun origin through his father. He came to power on July 17, 1489 following the death of his father. He faced opposition from his elder brother Barbak Shah, the viceroy of Jaunpur who also claimed for the throne. But his father had already nominated Sikander as his predecessor. He avoided bloodshed and allowed his brother to rule Jaunpur and also settled differences with his uncle, Alam Khan.


Known as a great administrator he promoted trade across his territory, and extended his territory into the regions of Gwalior and Bihar. But he showed discrimination against his Hindu subjects. With the pen name Gulrukhi, he wrote Persian poetry. He introduced auditing in accounts and introduced a system of Gaz-i-sikandari. His burial tomb resides in Lodi Gardens, Delhi.
