Siddaramaiah Biography

 

Siddaramaiah is an Indian politician who is serving as the Chief Minister of Karnataka. He has served as the Deputy Chief Minister of Karnataka twice formerly as a candidate of Janata Dal. When the Karnataka Pradesh Congress Committee president G Parameshwara was defeated in the Assembly elections he came to the forefront.

 

Siddaramaiah was born on 12th August 1948 in Siddaramanahundi village of Varuna Hobli of Mysore District. His father’s name is Siddaregowda and his mother’s name is Boramma. He could not get formal schooling but could manage to complete Bachelor of Science degree and then bachelor of law degree from Mysore University. He is one among the five children of his father. He married Parvathi and has two sons, Rakesh and Yathindra.

 

He started his career as junior lawyer under Chikkaboraiah in Mysore. He was influenced by Dr. Ram Manohar Lohia. In 1978, he started his political career and contested in the election and was elected to Mysore Taluka. In 1983, he contested from Chamundeshwari constituency as a representative of Bharatiya Lok Dal party and won.

 

He joined the Janata Party and this merged with other parties in 1988 to form Janata Dal. When there was a split in the Janata Dal in 1999, he sided with the Janata Dal Secular party headed by Deve Gowda and became the state president of the party.

 

He became the first president of Kannada Watchdog Committee and later became the Minister of Animal Husbandry and Veterinary Services. He handled various portfolios in the Ramakrishna Hegde’s ministry such as Sericulture, Animal Husbandry and Transport.

 

He lost in the Assembly elections of 1989 and in 1992 he became the Secretary General of Janata Dal. He was elected in 1994 State Elections and became the Minister of Finance. When J. H. Patel became the Chief Minister in 1996, he became the Deputy Chief Minister and again when Dharam Singh became the Chief Minister in 2004.

 

Due to his misunderstandings with Deve Gowda he was expelled from Janata Dal in 2006 and so he joined the Congress party. He contested in the Varuna Constituency in the 2008 state elections and won. He was again elected from the same constituency on 8th May 2013.
