Shreela Ghosh Biography

Shreela Ghosh is a noted actress and dancer from Assam. She is also a journalist. As an actress she is best known for appearing in BBC’s soap opera Angels in the year 1982. She also appeared in EastEnders (1985-1987) and her character name was Naima Jeffery. An actress of Bengali ethnicity, she was a late arrival to the show. However she looked the right choice for the role, despite being an inexperienced actress. The producers were in the search of a young Asian couple and she along with her husband Andrew Johnson bagged the role. Her role of Minnie in the ITV mini-series, The Jewel in the Crown in the year 1984 is also a popular role.

She was born in Shillong, in the year 1962. She is of Bengali ethnicity and she settled in London at the age of eleven. She is a trained classical dancer, trained in Kathak and Bharatnatyam art forms. Since the age of 17, she worked exclusively for theatre also. She worked as Marketing and Publicity Officer for Max Stafford-Clark’s Joint Stock Theatre Company. Later she got associated with television roles, through which she gained popularity as an actress globally, particularly for the shows for BBC. She made her television debut in the early 1980s and The Garland in 1981, Angels in 1982, Moving on the Edge in 1984, The Jewel in the Crown in 1984 etc are some of her early works.

She played the role of Naima Jeffery in the series, EastEnders who had a troubled marriage with her husband, a shopkeeper. Her real life husband Andrew Johnson played her husband’s role. Andrew Johnson moved to Hollywood after a few TV roles. Frustrated for being type casted for an Asian woman for TV soaps, she discontinued her acting career and had a fresh beginning as a reporter. She has also made a few documentaries. Since 2009, she serves as the Director of the Free Word Centre, promoting literary expressions.
