Shoma Chaudhury Biography

 

Shoma Chaudhury’s real name is Suparana Chaudhary. Shoma Chaudhury is her pen name. She is one of the founding members of the Tehelka magazine and former managing editor. She resigned the post on November 28, 2013 following accusations of wrong handling the case of sexual harassment charge against Tehelka founder-editor Tarun Tejpal. She is a literal critic and has served as one of the judges of the Vodafone Crossword Book Award in 2006.

 

Shoma hails from Bengal and her schooling was completed at several schools of Bengal including St. Helen’s Convent, Kurseong and La Martiniere School, Kolkata. Later she graduated from Lady Shri Ram College of Delhi University. Her post graduation was also completed at Delhi and currently she resides in Delhi. Shoma has worked in Doordarshan before she took journalism as main field. She has directed 40 weekly shows for Doordarshan. As a journalist, her journey started with ‘The pioneer’ where she worked as Books Editor. Later she worked for India today, Outlook and later she associated with Tehelka. She reached its Managing Editor, before she resigned it on November 28, 2013.

 

Since November 21, she has been in news because of how she handled a complaint of sexual assault by the young woman journalist against Tarun Tejpal, Tehelka’s co-founder. Though she is regarded as one of the powerful voice of women related issues, her response against the sex scandal of her co-worker raised everyone’s eye brows. She was widely criticized by media as well as social networking sites that resulted in her resignation after one week of the case.

 

As a journalist, she has been one of the powerful voices of women and has won several awards for her contributions to Indian media as a journalist. She received Ramnath Goenka Excellence in Journalism for Film and Television in the year 2008. Mumbai Press Club Award for Political Writing and Outstanding Woman Media person are other noted achievements. Her name was also listed under "150 Women who Shake the World" by Newsweek and The Daily Beast in 2011.
