Shobha Surendran Biography

Shobha Surendran is an aspiring political leader from Kerala, who belongs to Bharatiya Janata Party, which has gained momentum in the state in the recent times. Shobha currently serves as state president of BJP Mahila Morcha. Her husband K. K. Surendran is also a politician, associated with BJP. She unsuccessfully contested in Lok Sabha elections 2014 representing Bharatiya Janata Party. She contested from Palakkad constituency. In 2016 state assembly elections she actively participated in election campaigns, which witnessed the success of BJP for the first time in state politics. She was elected to the national executive committee of the party in 2013, becoming the first woman to hold this position.

Shobha hails from Vadakkaanchery, Thrissur district. She is the daughter of Kalyani. She is married to BJP leader, K. K. Surendran. She is an agriculturist.  She completed PDC from Calicut University in 1994. Associated with Bharatiya Janata Party alongside her husband, she is the first BJP woman leader from Kerala to hold a position at national level. In 2014 Sobha contested from the Palakkad constituency for BJP. But there was wide protest inside the party itself for giving Sobha a Lok Sabha ticket. Many party members believed that senior leader P. Krishna Kumar was actually eligible for the seat declared. Many members even decided to resign the party membership following the decision which didn’t go well with majority.

In 2016, both Shobha and her husband, K. K. Surendran unsuccessfully contested in state assembly elections from Manjeshwar and Palakkad constituencies respectively, and both the constituencies were won by UDF. In a nail biting finish at Manjeshwar of Kozhikode, K. K. Surendran lost to P.B. Abdul Razak of IUML by a narrow margin of just 89 votes. The constituency witnessed a powerful triangle contest this time. Shobha lost to Shafi Parambil of INC by 17483 votes. She finished second.
