Shobha Sen Biography

Shobha Sen is a famous Bengali theater artist and film actress. She is best known as the wife of legendary actor Utpal Dutt of Golmaal and Bhuvan Shome fame. Apart from Bengali movies, she also acted in Bollywood movies such as Ek Adhuri Kahani. She mostly portrayed supporting roles on Bengali screen and regularly shared screen space with actress Suchitra Sen in numerous films. Shobha has worked with many Bengali directors like Mrinal Sen, Basu Chatterjee and Gautam Ghose, apart from the directorial ventures of her husband. She also played the parallel lead in Ritwik Ghatak’s unfinished film – Bedeni, also known as Arup Kotha. It was Ritwik’s first movie as a director, which was abandoned due to technical reasons.

 

Shobha Sen was born on September 1923 in Faridpur, East Bengal, British India. She got married to leading Bengali actor Utpal Dutt and the couple had one daughter, Dr. Bishnupriya Dutt who is currently working as a professor of theatre history. She lost her husband in 1993. Shobha Sen graduated from Bethune College, and became active in theatre after that. During her early days she was associated with Gananatya Sangstha and was a part of the famous stage play, "Nahabat" which ran for more than 1200 nights. She shared screen space with the popular Bengali actor Bikash Roy for this play.

 

In the 1950s she was associated with theater troupes - Little Theatre Group, Peoples’ Theatre Group etc. Nahabat, Barricade, Tner Taloyar, Titumir etc are some of the popular plays in which she acted. Since 1950s she is associated with Bengali cinema and occasionally appears on Hindi screen too. She was last seen in Shadows of Time (2004) directed by Florian Gallenberger. She has currently retired from film scene.
