Shivaji Dutta Biography

Shivaji Dutta is an Indian fashion designer from Kolkata, Bengal who works with the signature, label ‘Blank Spot’. He primarily works on sustainable design for apparel and accessories and is the head of ‘Blank Spot’. Blank Spot works on the principle of sustainability, making new garments from old, reusing apparels. He focuses on the concept of re-use rather than recycling. He began his career in fashion design most recently in 2011.

Dutta was interested in political science, art and philosophy during his childhood and youth. But later he changed his mind to the art of fashion design. So he joined National Institute of Fashion Technology, Kolkata in 2004 and chose the subject, Textile Design. He graduated in the year 2008, and was the best All Round Performer of his batch, throughout 4 years. During this time, he completely made up his mind to choose design as his career option. Dutta launched his label, Blank Spot one year later in 2009. He started working with leather and textiles and concentrated on eco-friendly products. He designed both garments as well as bags using eco-friendly products. He focused on re-use of apparels and leather materials rather than focusing on re-cycling, because he could easily notice than re-cycling need less energy comparing to the other.

He showcased his collection at Lakme Fashion Week for the Summer-Resort season in the year 2011 thus marking his career beginning. Next time he presented his collections for Winter-Festive 2011 as an Emerging Designer. Both these shows were successful. His third runway show was at Vancouver Fashion Week, Fall Winter 2013. For Dutta, every project should be well-planned before initiation and each step should be accounted, similar to some scientific method. He also keeps discipline in his work.
