Shiva Thapa Biography

Shiva Thapa is an Indian boxer who excels in the flyweight category. He is supported by the non-profit organization Olympic Gold Quest. He represented India at the 2012 London Olympics. He gets his training at the Army Sports Institute at Pune.

 

Shiva Thapa was born on 8th December 1993 in Guwahati in Assam in Gorkha community. His father’s name is Padam Thapa. He is a karate instructor. His mother’s name is Goma Thapa. Shiva Thapa was born along with six siblings and his elder brother Gobind Thapa is a state level medal winner in boxing in Assam. Shiva was a hard worker and used to practice early in the morning. Being a middle class family, his father could not afford the expenses of his training and so he was taken care by the Olympic Gold Quest organization.

 

Shiva Thapa won bronze medal in the Children of Asia International Sports Games held at Moscow in 2008. In the 2009 Junior World Boxing Championships held at Armenia, he represented India in the 52 kg category. He ended up with a bronze medal in the event held at Yerevan.

 

He participated in the Asian Youth Boxing Championships held at Tehran in 2010 but could not reach the semifinals in that. He was a part of the Indian team at the Second Youth World Amateur Boxing Championships. This was held as a qualification event for the 2010 Summer Youth Olympics. He got silver medal in that event and was qualified for the Youth Olympics and in that event also he won silver medal in the 54 kg category.

 

He participated in the Asian Olympic Qualifiers held in Astana in Kazakhstan and bagged gold medal in that event getting an entry into the 2012 London Olympics in 56 kg category thus becoming the youngest Indian boxer in compete in Olympics. However he failed to shine there and had to quit with the first round.

 

He was rewarded adequately by the Government of Assam by offering him one lakh rupees, by the Indian Olympic Association by offering him four lakh rupees for getting silver medal at the Youth Olympics and by the Government of Sikkim by awarding him five lakh rupees cash.
