Shiv Bahadur Singh Biography

Shiv Bahadur Singh was a Congress politician who served as a member of Jawaharlal Nehru’s cabinet. He served as the minister of Industry. He was convicted for bribery in 1950 and was sent to jail for forging documents. He was found guilty for forgery, criminal conspiracy, and "illegal gratification by a public servant". He was sentenced to three year imprisonment. However he died in jail in 1953. He belonged to Jagirdaar family. Prominent politician and Congress leader Arjun Singh is his son. Arjun singh has served as Chief Minister of Madhya Pradesh and Union Human Resources Development Minister.

 

He was a landlord from Churhat, Madhya Pradesh, born in the year 1894. Singh was the 26th "Rao" of Churhat. He joined active politics and Indian national congress during the time of Indian independence. He was one of the prominent leaders from Madhya Pradesh and very soon he rose to top position of Indian National Congress. In 1950, he was convicted of taking bribes to issue a forged document for a diamond mining firm. It permitted the closed Panna Diamond Mining syndicate to resume operations, in return of Rs. 25,000 by Nagindas Mehta as bribe. It was done when he served as the minister of Vindhya Pradesh, before the formation of the state of Madhya Pradesh.

 

As soon as the scandal was exposed, he was expelled from the party. In 1953, Singh submitted appeal to Supreme Court. But he was not freed from the allegations of bribery. The appeal was reversed on all counts and he later died in prison in 1955.
