Shashank Biography

Shashank is an extremely talented director of Kannada film industry at present. His films are well received by audience as well as critics. He has done only 5 films till now. Yet he has established his name among the most talented directors of the time. His debut movie was Sixer released in 2007, followed by Moggina Manasu (2008), Krishnan Love Story (2010), Jarasandha (2011) and Bachchan (2013). In 2008, he received Filmfare Award for Best Direction for the movie, Moggina Manasu. In 2010, he received Udaya & Suvarna channel film award for Best Direction for the movie, Krishnan Love Story. He has introduced many young actors to Kannada film industry who have become established actors right now. Prajwal Devaraj, Yash and Radhika Pandit are among those.

Shashank was born as Umesh in an agriculture family in a small village called Taalya in Karnataka. His parents are Hanumanthappa and Lakkamma. He was born as their third child. He was later adopted by his maternal uncle and aunt, Chandrashekarappa and Shantamma. He completed his matriculation in Bhadravati and he completed his diploma in civil engineering from Chikmagalur (1991). Yet his real dream was to see the big celluloid behind screens and camera. After completing diploma course, he started his career as a site engineer in Bangalore with the sole aim to find works in movies in the big city. After a wait of 2 years, he became the assistant director of S. Mahendar, in the film “Taayi illada tavaru” (1994), followed by 9 movies in assistant director role.

Later he met legendary music director Hamsalekha, which proved to be the turning point of his journey. He taught young Umesh tricks of screenplay constructions and musical narration. As per his suggestion, he changed his name to Shashank as well. yet it took 13 patient years for directing his first independent film.
