Shashaa Tirupati Biography

Shashaa Tirupati is a young singing sensation of Indo-Canadian origin, who has done playback singing for some noted works of A. R. Rahman. "Vaada Vaada" from 'Kochadaiiyaan’ was her debut song followed by "Aye Mr. Minor" for 'Kaaviyathalaivan'. She also sung three songs for Mani Ratnam’s ambitious project OK Kanmani, composed by Rahman. Kaara Aattaakkaara, Paranthu Sella Vaa and Naane Varugiraen are those songs. Her recent song, "Silikku Marame" with Divya Kumar for the recent film Paayum Puli was an instant hit. She is also associated with Bollywood and Telugu cinema.

 

In 2015, she received Vikatan Awards for Best female singer for the song, Naane Varugiren from the movie ‘Ok kanmani’. Another song - Kaara Aattakaara from the same movie gave her a nomination at IIFA Awards. Aye Mr. Minor from Kaaviyathalaivan earned her Best Female Singer Upcoming award at Mirchi Music Awards and a nomination for best singer at Big Tamil Melody Awards 2015. A well trained classical singer, she has won many prizes and recognitions. During the period 1997-2000, she won First prize continuously for the categories, Hindustani Khayal and Tumri competitions at Sangeet Natak Academy. She has won in the sub-junior, junior and senior categories except the year 1999.

 

She was born on 21 December 1987. She is of Kashmiri descent, though she owns Canadian citizenship. She left her studies in the middle to pursue a career in music. She is a trained classical singer. She was spotted by A. R. Rahman in Coke Studio Season 3, who gave her the first break to playback singing. After singing a few beautiful tracks for Rahman, she also performed in the AR Rahman: Greatest Hits Concert at the O2 Arena, London in 2015. She also sang for Bollywood films - Bumm Bumm Bole, Turning 30, Jo Hum Chahein etc. Her songs for Marathi super hit film, "Coffee Ani Barach Kahi” were well appreciated.

 

An avid fan of Rahman, she has placed a photo of Rahman in her temple and has been doing Pooja for long 12 years. She is also inspired by Bollywood great singers - Mohammed Rafi and Lata Mangeshkar. She also idolizes Louis Armstrong and Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan. She has worked for more than 400 jingles and hopes she would learn Tamil language soon. She came to India in 2007.
