Sharad Yadav Biography

Sharad Yadav is a senior politician associated with Janata Dal (United) party and has served its President position twice. He has served as the general secretary of the party twice. Currently he is a member of Rajya Sabha. He has been elected for the second time to Rajya Sabha. A prominent and influential leader in the recent times of Indian politics, he has been elected to Lok Sabha seven times. As a Union cabinet minister, he has been assigned the portfolios - Textiles and Food Processing Industries (1989-1990), Civil Aviation (1999) and Labour (2001). He also served as the Chairman, Committee on Urban Development during his 7th term to 15th Lok Sabha in 2009.

 

He was born on 1 July 1947 into a farmer’s family of Akhmau village in Hoshangabad district of Madhya Pradesh, a few days before Indian independence. An excellent student in studies, he completed Civil Engineering from Jabalpur Engineering College with a gold medal. Influenced by the teachings of Dr. Ram Manohar Lohia, he participated in a number of mass movements and has been arrested for a couple of times in the late 1960s and early 1970s. By that time he rose as an influential youth leader.

 

He contested to Lok Sabha elections for the first time in 1974, a time when JP Movement was at its peak. He contested from Jabalpur (MP) constituency and got elected to Lok sabha for the first time. He got elected to Lok Sabha for the second time from the same constituency in 1977. In 1989 he got elected from Baduan (UP) Lok Sabha constituency and there after he contested from Madhepura (Bihar) Lok Sabha constituency. He had a success streak of 7 Lok Sabha elections, before he was finally defeated in 2014 Lok Sabha elections from Madhepura.
