Shanthi Williams Biography

Shanti Williams is a character artist of Malayalam and Tamil cinema. She regularly appears in television serials as well. She is the widow of legendary cinematographer of Malayalam cinema - J. Williams. She is mostly associated with Tamil cinema and television industry and portrays mother roles in most of them. She is quite active in Tamil cinema. She played Ambi’s (Vikram) mother in Anniyan, Kausalya’s mother in Manadhai Thirudivittai, Pandiarajan’s mother in Suyamvaram, Malavika’s mother in Lovely, Cheran’s mother in Moondru Per Moondru Kadal etc. Gentleman, Climax, Thendral, Poovellam Un Vasam, Cheena Thaana 001, Parthiban Kanavu and Alli thanda vaanam are a few more noted roles on big screen. She plays double role in SUN TV serial Vani Rani. Metti Oli is her popular Tamil serial. Her negative role in K. Balachander’s Thendral is one of her noted performances, and it helped her to bag several awards.


She was born in Coimbatore, Tamil Nadu. But both her parents are Keralites from Thrissur. The family settled at Chennai when she was quite young and her studies were completed in Chennai. She entered film world as a child artist at the age of 12 and later portrayed character roles. She first appeared in a documentary film of Ramu karyat at the age of 12. She played heroine in the documentary film made on tribe and the same film bagged a National award as well. Narthasala, followed by Mucheettu Kalikkaran marked her debut on film screen.

 
Later she became a busy star on big screen. She mostly portrayed second heroine role and very soon she reached Tamil world. She got married to cinematographer Williams in 1979 and she took a break from the industry. She returned back in the early 1990s, portraying elder roles.
