Shankarrao Chavan Biography

Shankarrao Chavan was a prominent politician from Maharashtra who served as Chief Minister of Maharashtra twice. A noted parliamentarian he also served as the cabinet minister of India twice. He served as the Minister of Finance in Rajiv Gandhi’s cabinet during 1988-1989, and Minister of Home Affairs for a term of 5 years during 1991-1996 under P. V. Narasimha Rao’s cabinet. He also served as President of The Bharat Scouts and Guides for a long period of 15 years from 1983 to 1998. He passed away in 2004.

 

Chavan’s family members have also followed his footsteps. His son Ashok Chavan is also a prominent politician of Maharashtra who served as Chief Minister during 2008-2009, and has also served as a cabinet minister. He currently serves as MP representing Nanded constituency. His daughter-in-law Ameeta Ashokrao Chavan is currently an MLA of Bhokar constituency, Maharashtra.

 

Dr. Shankarrao Bhavrao Chavan, shortly called S. B. Chavan was born on 14 July 1920. After completing graduation from Madras University, he took LLB from Osmania University and started his professional career. He gave up practice of law during the 'Quit Court' Movement in the former Hyderabad State. In the post-independent period, he got actively involved with politics and got elected to Bombay State Legislative Council in 1956.

 

He was a member of Maharashtra Legislative Assembly during 1957-1980, and got successively elected during 1962, 1967, 1972 and 1978 elections and he represented Bhokar constituency. In 1980 he got elected to Lok Sabha for the first time, followed by 1985. During both these terms, he served as a cabinet minister and held portfolios – Home, Education, Culture and Social Welfare, External Affairs, finance and Defence. He served as the 5th Chief Minister of Maharashtra during 1986-1988. Later he served as the Home Minister of India in the Narasimha Rao cabinet.
