Shankar Nag Biography

Shankar Nag’s full name is Shankar Nagarkatte. He was an actor and director of Kannada cinema who gave valuable contributions to the industry in the short life span. He died in a car accident in the year 1990 aged 34. He was one of the most talented young directors of late 1980’s and film critics still believe that he could have contributed much more to the industry if he had lived long. He has also c-scripted National award winning Marathi movie, 22 June 1897 and he is the director of one of the most popular television serials of late 1980’s, Malgudi days in which he acted as well. Veteran Kannada actor Anant Nag is his elder brother, and he was married to noted film and stage actress, Arundathi Nag who appears in character roles in movies as well.

 

Shankar Nagarkatte was born on 9 November 1954 in Mallapur village in Karnataka to Anandi and Sadanand Nagarkatte. After completing formal education, he moved to Mumbai where he was attracted to Marathi theater. It was during this time when he met Arundathi Nag, a noted theatre artist then. They got married later. When he shifted back to his home town, his elder brother was already an established actor of Kannada film industry and he suggested his younger brother to act in movies. Shankar later appeared in several movies as an actor before he shifted to direction field.

 

As an actor, his debut movie was Ondanondu Kaladalli, directed by Girish Karnad. His film career began in 1978 and till his death in 1990 he acted in 80 movies in leading and supporting roles. He earned the title, Karate King also. As a scriptwriter, his works are Parameshi Prema Prasanga, 22 June 1897 and Geetha. Shankar began his directorial with Minchina Ota. Janma Janmada Anubandha, Geetha, Nodi Swamy Navirodu Hige, Hosa Teerpu, Lalach, Accident and Ondu Muttina Kathe are his noted works.
