Shammi Narang Biography

Shammi Narang – the Voice of Delhi Metro, is a former Indian broadcaster, news reader and voice-over artist. A very familiar face of Doordarshan during its glorious era of 1980s, this broadcaster is known for raising the standards of news-casting in India. He became the 'face of Doordarshan news reading' in the 1980s. An engineer by profession he first got into the voice-over profession by working in the Hindi division of Voice of America. Later he got selected to Doordarshan, which was the only broadcasting Indian channel in the 1970s and 1980s. His rendering of ‘Sarab Sanjhi Gurbani’ became popular among Sikhs globally. All Hindi voice messages of railway stations, apart from announcements at Metro are recorded in Shammi’s voice. Thus his voice is heard many millions every day. He currently serves as the MD of Studio Pindrop, media solution company.

He was born in Delhi on 25 November 1956. His father served the Indian Army. He was motivated by his father to do stunt riding and similar hobbies and Narang has worked as a stunt rider for Escorts. He completed Post graduate degree in Metallurgical Engineering. He is also a semi-classical singer, who got married to musician Jaidev’s disciple, Dolly Narang.

Once a technical director of The United States Information Service, Flanager spotted him at the auditorium of newly built IIT campus, Delhi. He asked Narang to assist him in his sound testing. It was Flanager who recognized the potential of Shammi. He referred Narang to Shastri, a Hindi scholar, who groomed him for the Hindi division of Voice of America. He also worked as a marketing professional and stunt rider for a while as he loved adventures.

But a terrible accident in the early 1980s gave an end to his career as a stunt rider and gave him misshapen nose as well. In 1982, he got selected for Doordarshan, thus beginning 20 year association with the channel. Apart from news broadcasting, he has also done voice-over and also had brief stint in theatre.
