Shakti Singh (cricketer) Biography

Shakti Singh is an Indian cricketer who has played for India in domestic matches. He is a Bollywood playback singer too, who got associated with music world after his retirement – indeed a rare phenomenon. Currently he serves as a match referee. A bowler, he holds the record of highest number of sixes in a Ranji match. He made the record in a match against Haryana at Dharamsala in 1990-91 – the innings which marked his single century too. This cricketer though had an outstanding innings in domestic cricket as a pace bowler, taking 200 First Class wickets for Himachal Pradesh he is a bit disappointed that he could never get an opportunity to play for international matches.

 

He hails from Mandi, Himachal Pradesh. He was born in 19 May 1968. As a first class cricketer he has played for Delhi and Himachal Pradesh teams. Singh has been an all-rounder to his team, though he is better known as a medium pace bowler. He was a right-handed batsman. He played 16 seasons of domestic cricket which include 58 first-class and 28 List A matches. He hit 14 sixes in an innings against Haryana in 1990-1991 season, breaking the previous record of 15 balls. He also broke the record of fastest fifty in Ranji Trophy. It took only 18 balls for him to reach his fifty.

 

He was associated with MRF Pace Academy which trained cricketers like Javagal Srinath, Venkatesh Prasad, Ashish Winston Zaidi, Prashant Vaidya, Vivek Razdan and Subrato Banerjee. After retirement from cricket, he started his career as a playback singer in Bollywood in 2006. ‘Mere Dil Leke Dekho’ composed by Jatin-Lalit marked his beginning in Bollywood. He is a great fan of Kishore Kumar, Mohammed Rafi, Yesudas, S.P. Balasubramaniam and Ghulam Ali. He rendered his voice for the Bollywood films - Atithi Tum Kab Jaoge?, Life Partner, Patiala House etc. His daughter Shivranjani Singh has also entered playback singing.
