Shakti Samanta Biography

Shakti Samanta is one among the great directors of 60’s and 70’s who has given superstars and super hits to Bollywood.  He is the director of movie Aradhana of 1969 which made Kishore Kumar and Rajesh Khanna overnight stars. Not only that, he has given many platinum jubilee hits like An evening in Paris, Katti patang, Amar prem, China town, Pagla kahi ka, Howrah bridge, Kashmir ki kali, Balika vadhu, Anuraag, Barsaat ki raat, The great gambler and Amanush. So, he has proved himself to be a successful director who knows the correct formula of movies that always connect well with the souls of audience.

 

After completing his studies, he joined the industry as an assistant director in Bombay Talkies in the year 1948 and worked for a few films. As a director his first movie was Bahu in 1954 and throughout his career, he has directed 37 Hindi movies and 6 Bengali movies. He formed Shakthi films in 1957, under which he produced movies thereafter. Howrah Bridge was the first movie under this banner. He has re-defined many actors of Bollywood by giving good films. Rajesh Khanna, Shammi Kapoor, Sharmila Tagore, Asha Parekh, Madhubala and Saira Bhanu can be included in this list. In fact, it was through Kashmir ki kali, that Saira banu debut silver screen. Through his movies, he placed Sharmila Tagore in two ways. Through An evening in Paris, she was made a glamorous sexy girl while she echoed a true traditional girl through Shakti Samanta movies – Aradhana, Amanush and Amar Prem. No doubt, Shakti Samanta has helped her a lot to establish her as a sucecsful actress of Bollywood.

 

Through Aradhana and Amar Prem, he gave two big actors of Bollywood – Rajesh Khanna and Sharmila Tagore; not only that, he made them the best onscreen couple of Bollywood. In 1974, he made Amanush in Bengali as well as Hindi, a new trend in Indian movies. It can be noted that most of his movies started with letter ‘ A’ and have proved successful as well. He worked most with Rajesh Khanna, Shammi Kapoor and Sharmila Tagore and has won Filmfare for movies Aradhana, Amanush and Anuraag. Shankar-Jaikishen, S.D.Burman, R.D.Burman and O.P.Nayyar were among those music composers who created super hit songs for Shakti Samanta movies that are heard by millions now also.
