Shakeel Badayuni Biography

Shakeel Badayuni was an Urdu poet and lyricist in the golden era of Bollywood music. As a lyricist, he has given significant contribution to Bollywood music during 50’s and 60’s. His most memorable songs belong to the movies – Chaudvin ka Chand, Gharana and Bees saal baad, the movies for which he won a hat-trick at Filmfare, the first lyricist to get this achievement. The songs were title track of Chaudwin ka chand, Husnwala tera and Kahi deep jale kahi dil respectively. He still holds the record of 3 consecutive wins in Filmfare. After that he was not able to win at least once, though he has been nominated in 1967 for the songs, Mere Mehboob Tujhe Meri ohabbat of Meri Mehboob and Naseeb Me Jiske of Do badan. It can be seen that his significant contribution to Bollywood was till 1965 and he passed away in the year 1970, at a comparatively younger age of 53. He has also penned a few ghazals which were sung by Pankaj Udhas.

Shakeel Badayuni was born in Badayun of UP in the year 1916. His father was greatly interested in seeing his son at career heights. So he arranged separate tuitions for his son for the languages – Persian, Hindi, Urdu and Arabic. Shakeel was influenced by his distant relative, Zia-ul-Qadiri Badayuni, a religious shayar. While he was studying in Aligarh Muslim University, he began to participate in shayaranas. After his marriage he moved to Mumbai in 1944 in passion of joining movies as lyricist. His debut movie was Dard in 1947, composed by Naushad Ali. His association with Naushad was quite successful with big packages like Baiju bawra which brought singer Mohd.Rafi to limelight. Mother India and Mughal E Azam are other legendary hits of the association of Naushad with Shakeel Badayuni, perhaps the best compositions by this great composer. Shakeel Badayuni shared a close friendship with great compsoers Naushad, Ravi and ghazal singer Ghulam Mohammed.

His other memorable movies include Chaudvin ka Chand, Gharana, Dulari, Do Badan , Bin Badal Barsaat , Noorjahan, Zindagi Aur Maut, Phool Aur Patthar, Ganga Jamuna, Shabab, Saahib biwi aur ghulam, Baiju Bawra, Ganga Jamuna and Bees saal baad.
