Shailendra Singh Biography

Shailendra Singh is a playback singer of Bollywood most known for Rishi Kapoor songs in Bobby. Actually he has been type casted as Rishi Kapoor though he has sung numerous songs in Rishi Kapoor’s voice. He has sung numerous songs in Sachin’s voice too, of which Akhiyon ki jarokom se is immensely popular till now.  Apart from Bobby, his successful movies include - Do Jasoos, Aar ya paar, Amar Akbar Anthony, Khatta meeta, Amiri Garibi, Aap Ki Khatir, Saagar , Akhiyon ki jarokom se, Bhai Aakhir Bhai Hota Hai, Taraana, Bequaraar and Aapas Ki Baat. Among Rishi Kapoor’s songs, songs of Bobby in Lxmikanth Pyarelal’s composition and songs of Saagar in R.D.Burman’s compositions are the great hits of Shailendra Singh. He has won Filmfare nomination once for the movie – Bobby (1973). The song was mega blockbuster song, “mein shayar to nahi”, though he couldn’t win it. As a singer he was immensely popular in Rishi Kapoor’s voice. But he failed to attain songs for other leading actors of Bollywood, if a few exceptions are not counted.

 

Shailendra Singh was born on October 4, 1952 in Mumbai. He studied at Hill Grange High School at Peddar Road, Mumbai and completed his graduation at St. Xavier's College, Mumbai. In true means, he wanted to become an actor. Hence after completing graduation in Mumbai he joined Film and Television Institute of India in Pune. While his second year studies were going on, he got opportunity to sing for Bobby. He sang all songs for Rishi Kapoor, the debut hero. It was the debut movie of Dimple Kapadia too. Bobby created huge waves among the teens and youth. The successful pairing of Rishi and Dimple were well noticed along with songs sung by Shailendra Singh. Songs like Mein shayar to nahi, Jhoot bole kauwa kaate/Na maangu sona chandi, Mujhe Kuchh Kahna Hai and Hum tum ek kamare mein band ho experienced a new height among the music fans.

 

His other contributions include – Kai din se mujhe and Ek Din Tum Bahut Bade Banoge of Akhiyon ki jarokom se, Amar Akbar Anthony title track, Purawaiyya, leke chali meri naiyya of Do jasoos, Jaane Do Na of Do jasoos and Humne Tumko Dekha of Khel khel mein.
