Shail Chaturvedi Biography

Shail Chaturvedi was a poet, film actor and humorist. He is known for his literal pieces with satire characteristics. He has worked as a character actor in numerous Bollywood films of and 1970’s and 1980’s and has also appeared in television serials. He was a regular artist of annual kavi sammelan on Doordarshan during the occasion of Holi and was better known as a ‘hasya kavi’ (humour poet) during 1970’s. He is most remembered for his political satire in the 70’s and the 80’s. As a comedian, his better roles are Kareeb, Chitchor, Uphaar and Chameli ki shaadi.

Chaturvedi was born on June 29, 1936 in Amaravati, Maharashtra. After completing studies, he started his career as a lecturer at Allahabad University. But very soon, he got attached with kavi sammelans where he became popular for his satire poems. His place is among satire poets during 1970’s and 1980’s and he belongs to the contemporary group of satire poets like Kaka Hathrasi, Pradeep Chaubey and Ashok Chakradhar. He has also appeared as a character artist in Bollywood movies like - Uphaar (1971), Mere bhayya (1972), Chitchor (1976), Payal Ki Jhankaar (1980), Jazbaat (1980), Hum Do Hamare Do (1985), Chameli Ki Shaadi (1986), Narasimha (1991), Dhanwaan (1993), Tirchhi Topiwale (1998) and Kareeb (1998). He has also appeared in comedy sitcoms of Doordarshan like Zabaan samalke, Shrimaan shrimati and Byomekesh Bakshi and was quite popular also.

His published books include - Bazar Ka Ye Hal Hai and Chal gayi. He passed away on October 29, 2007 at the age of 71. He was suffering from chronic renal failure. Chaturvedi was well-known for his cynical approach to everyday life and he had an extra ordinary talent to quote something humorous from anything he observes around.
