Shahbaz Khan Biography

Shahbaz Khan, born into a musical family is a noted actor of Bollywood and a very popular actor on small screen, best known for playing the lead role of Prince Virendra Singh in the most popular Doordarshan fantasy series of 1990s – Chandrakanta. He was paired in a romantic role with Shikha Swaroop who played the princess’s role in the series. He shot to stardom following this television series aired on Doordarshan in the mid-1990s. But he portrayed mostly negative roles on Bollywood screen and has appeared only in character or negative shaded roles. Shahbaz is the son of renowned and legendary musician and the founder of the Indore Gharana, Amir Khan. Yet he is happy to establish an identity of his own.

 

His role as Kunwar Virendra Singh in Chandrakanta is widely regarded as one of the great heroes played on Indian mini screen. He also played the lead role of Mahadji Scindia in the popular television series - The Great Maratha, aired on Doordarshan in the 1990s. His role of Hyder Ali in The Sword of Tipu Sultan also needs special mention. It was his first breakthrough role before Chandrakanta happened to him.

 

Shahbaz Khan originally belongs to Indore, Madhya Pradesh. He was born to Amir Khan - one of the most influential figures in Hindustani classical music and his third wife, Raisa Begum. Amir Khan met with an accident and died in Kolkata during Shahbaz’s childhood. Shahbaz was only 9 years old then. He completed his studies in Hislop College Nagpur. Then he worked in a local bar for a few years before moving to Mumbai to pursue a career in acting. Though born into the illustrious musical family, Shahbaz wanted to become an actor. But he owns the credit of cutting an audio album with a semi-classical score years back. He is also associated with theatre.

 

The actor believes that Doordarshan, a platform with the highest viewer reach had some outstanding works in the 1990s. He has been a part of several memorable serials like Chandrakanta, The great Maratha, Yug and The sword of Tipu Sultan. Nowadays he is known as a baddie on small screen as well as big screen.  Bharat Ka Veer Putra – Maharana Pratap, Ek Ghar Banaunga and Dekha Ek Khwaab are some of his recent works on small screen and played villain’s role in Saif Ali Khan starrer Agent Vinod.
