Shafi Inamdar Biography

Shafi Inamdar was a successful character artist of Bollywood and television actor. Noted theatre artist and film actress Bhakti Barve is his wife. His career started in the year 1982 with the movie, Vijeta and he died at a comparatively young age of 50 on March 13, 1996. Bhakti Barve  too died at a younger age in a car accident 5 years later in 2001. As a film actor, his noted works are Aaj Ki Awaaz, for which he won a nomination for best supporting actor in the year 1985, Akele Hum Akele Tum, Ghayal, Phool bane angarey, Saagar, Jurm, Takkar, Izzatdaar, Awam, Anokha Rishta, Sada suhagan, Yeshwant, Nazrana, Hip Hip Hurray, Arjun, Vardi and Love 86. He is particularly known for portraying the common man's role. He has also directed one movie in his career – Hum Dono that was a commercial success.

 

Born on 23 October 1945 in Maharashtra, he completed his school days at St. Joseph's High School in Umerkhadi, Mumbai in 1958. He took B.Sc from K.C College in 1963. From school days, he was interested in acting and used to participate in school dramas. Elocution competition and debates were also his interests. It was his dream to become a well known theatre artist.

 

He started his career as an actor –director under the guidance of famous Gujarati theatre personality Pravin Joshi. During the period 1973 to 1978, he acted and directed about 30 one act plays belonging to different languages. Then he joined Indian National Theatre and Indian Peoples Theatre Association. His association with Balraj Sahni and other stalwarts of Indian Theatre gave him new lessons in the field of acting. Ismat Chugtai’s play Nila Kamra, during late 1970’s proved to be the turning point of his career. Doordarshan serial, Yeh Jo Hai Zindagi made him a popular figure. Later he appeared in a few more television serials like - Mirza Ghalib, Teri bhi chup Meri bhi chup and Adha Sach.
