Seema Biswas Biography

Seema Biswas is an actress of Bollywood who is famous for the movie ‘Bandit Queen’ for her role as Phoolan Devi. She was credited with a National award as well, though the nude scene of the movie also created controversies. The movie was directed by versatile director Shekhar Kapur. Apart from movies, she is a successful and talented theatre actress. She hails from Assam. Other remarkable movie of her career is Deepa Mehta’s Water in the year 2005. She won best actress Genia award for her role as Shakuntala in this movie. She has also won the 2000 Sangeet Natak Akademi Award. Apart from Bandit queen, her memorable roles include Bhoot, Khamoshi the musical and Company.

Biswas was born in Nalbari, Assam in the year 1965. Her mother was a history teacher and theatre artist who influenced her a lot to choose a career in acting. After completing Political Science degree at Nalbari College she joined National School of Drama, New Delhi. She completed her studies in the year 1984 and later joined the NSD Repertory Company. Then she became interested in theatre works and became a successful actress in theatres.

As a film actress, her first movie was Kishan Kartha's Amshini in the year 1988. She was casted in heroine’s role and critically well acclaimed movie entered the Indian Panorama Section of Filmotsav. As it was not a commercial movie, she didn’t become a popular face among the people. It was her role in Bandit queen in the year 1996 that shot her to fame and won her many nominations and awards. Shekhar Kapur happened to watch her performance in NSD Repertory Company and offered her the leading role of the movie. She has also worked for a few Asameese movies also.  

Her other movies list include – Deewangee, Ek hassena thi, Vivah, Mumbai Godfather, Zindaggi Rocks, Shaurya, Ladies Only, Midnight's Children, Chaarfutiya Chhokare, Hazaar Chaurasi Ki Maa,Pinjar and Dobara. She won best debut actress in Filmfare for Bandit Queen. She has been nominated thrice at Star screen awards for supporting actress role, Khamoshi, Company and Bhoot and she won it for her memorable performance in Khamosh as the dumb and deaf wife of Nana Patekar.
