Satyendra Narayan Sinha Biography

Satyendra Narayan Sinha, shortly called S. N. Sinha was a freedom fighter, educationalist and a very popular politician belonging to Janata Party from the state of Bihar. He served as the chief minister of Bihar in 1989-1990 and has served as the State Cabinet Minister several times handling different portfolios of Education, Local Self Government, Agriculture etc. S. N. Sinha's wife Kishori Sinha is a former Member of Parliament from Vaishali. His son, Nikhil Kumar is a former IPS official and currently serves as Governor of Nagaland. His daughter-in-law Shyama Singh is a former parliamentarian from Aurangabad. His autobiography work is titled, Meri Yadein: Meri Bhoolein.

Sinha was born in an aristocratic political family in Poiwan in 1917. He was born to eminent nationalist leader, Dr. Anugrah Narayan Sinha who has served as thefirst Deputy Chief Minister and Finance Minister of Bihar soon after its formation. Sinha’s student days were spent under the tutelage of Lal Bahadur Shastri at Allahabad. Thus he was brought up in a political environment. After graduation, he took LLB from Lucknow University and practised law at the Patna High Court. But he left the practice in the middle soon after joining freedom struggle movement.

After Independence he was elected to the provisional Parliament from Bihar in 1950. He was known as a prominent educationalist and has served as the education minister of Bihar in three terms. Local Self Government and Agriculture are other portfolios held by him. He was made president of Bihar Janata Party and Chairman of State Election Committee in 1977, when the Emergency period was going on. Later he worked under many prominent leaders of Janata Party throughout his political career.
