Satish Bahadur Biography

Satish Bahadur was a Film activist and pioneer of Film Appreciation who was the Professor of Film Appreciation at the Film and Television Institute of India for two decades since 1963. A close associative of Marie Seton, Vijaya Mulay and P. K. Nair, he has also published many papers on different aspects of the film studies. Apart from his career as a professor in FTII, he also worked on several film and television programs explaining the basic concepts of Film Appreciation. Before he introduced Film Appreciation, it was unknown in India.

Satish Bahadur was born on 26 November 1925 at Moradabad. He studied at the University of Agra and the Allahabad University. Before he joined a professor in FTII, he taught Economics at DAV College, Kanpur and University Institute of Social Sciences, Agra. Though basically a teacher, he had keen interest in the arts, particularly cinema. As a staunch film society activist, he launched campus film club in Agra University, the first one of this kind in Indian Universities. He also served as its secretary.

In 1955 he came into contact with Marie Seton, who reached India as invited by Jawaharlal Nehru for development of cinema in India. She became actively associated with the promotion of the film society movement in numerous ways. It was that time when an idea of introducing Film Appreciation as a part of academic studies came into discussion. When Seton took initial steps to include this subject as an extra-curricular, she invited Satish to join FTII, as a separate wing. Though he was reluctant at first, he finally agreed. For the next 20 years since 1963 he was associated with FTII and known for his outstanding contributions in the field of Film Appreciation. His teachings were not bounded to campus alone. He took it far beyond its boundaries.
