Santosh Sivan Biography
Santhosh Sivan is an Indian cinematographer and film director who concentrates in Tamil and Malayalam film industry. He is an excellent cinematographer and has won many awards for his extensive work in Indian film industry.
He was born on 8th March 1964 in Trivandrum in Kerala. He belongs to a family of artists. His father used to make documentary films and he used to accompany his father to many remote areas of South India. In his childhood days, he used to listen to the stories of his grandmother who introduced him to the great paintings of Raja Ravi Varma. He is the elder brother of director Sanjiv Sivan and younger brother of Sangeeth Sivan. He is married with two children.
After getting his graduation from the Film and Television Institute of India, he has directed more than 45 feature films and 41 documentary films. He serves as the founding member of the Indian Society of Cinematographers. He served as the Jury of the Busan Film Festival. His films like Halo, Ashoka, Tahaan, The Terrorist, Malli, Prarambha and Navarasa received worldwide acclaim.
He has also shot advertisements for popular brands like BPL, Cadbury, Pepsi, Videocon, Santro, Lays, Voltas, Indian Express, Maruti Alto, Kerala Tourism, Bhima Jewelry, etc. Some of the films that he has directed include Urumi, Tahaan, Prarambha, Anandabhadram, Navarasa, Asoka, Malli, Halo, The Terrorist, Story of Tiblu, etc.
Some of the films for which he has worked as cinematographer include Perumthachan, Roja, Aham, Yodha, Nimayam, Barsaat, Kalapani, Iruvar, Dil Se, Vanaprastham, Fiza, Asoka, Bride and Prejudice, Raavanan, Urumi, Thuppakki, etc. He also has acted in the lead role in the film Makaramanju. He is the first one in Asia Pacific to receive the American Society of Cinematographers membership. He has won 11 National Awards and 16 International Award a rare honor to be achieved by any Indian.
