Santosh Gangwar Biography

Santosh Gangwar is an Indian politician belonging to Bharatiya Janata Party. He is a prominent figure of his party and also a parliamentarian associated with state and national level politics. He got elected to Lok Sabha in 2014 general elections from Bareilly constituency and currently serves as Minister of State with independent charge in the Ministry of Labour and Employment since 03 September 2017. He has been elected to Lok Sabha from Bareilly constituency multiple times since 1989. Except 2009 general elections, he has retained the seat, and with 2014 elections he restored his influential position in the constituency once again. He lost 2009 Lok Sabha seat by a narrow margin.

Santosh Gangwar hails from Bareilly, present-day UP. Teolia is his birth place and he was born on 1 November 1948. He attended Agra University and the Rohilkhand University completing his graduation and LLB studies respectively. He was involved with social service long before he joined politics. He got involved in the establishment of the Urban Cooperative Bank in Bareilly, which earned him immense popularity among the masses. He turned a popular leader of his hometown. He also served as the chairman of Urban Cooperative Bank since its formation. He got involved with many other social activities, and when he joined politics, he successfully contested from the same constituency since 1989 till date, except 2009 general elections. He won the constituency for 6 continuous terms.

Gangwar was jailed during the Emergency for his protests against government and leading people. He got involved in regional politics, associated with BJP before joining parliament through 1989 Lok Sabha elections. He currently serves as Minister of State (Independent Charge) for Labour and Employment, and has held portfolios such as Finance and Textiles, during 05 July 2016 – 03 September 2017 and 26 May 2014 – 7 July 2016 respectively.
