Santidev Ghosh Biography

Santidev Ghosh was an Indian writer, dancer and expert of Rabindra sangeeth. He was an actor also. Ghosh became the teacher of Santiniketan at a younger age and he was elected by none other than Tagore. While in Santiniketan, his talents were encouraged by Tagore too. "Krishnakali", a new set of poems written by Tagore was first presented by Ghosh on stage with some modifications. Ghosh taught numerous students at Santiniketan of whom, Suchitra Mitra and Pramita Mallick became noted singers later. He was declared a National Scholar by the Government of India and in 2002, a postage stamp released on Ghosh. In 1976, he was awarded the Sangeet Natak Akademi Fellowship the highest honour conferred by Sangeet Natak Akademi.

 

Santidev Ghosh was born on May 7, 1910 in the village of Bajapti, Bengal. Now this place belongs to Bangladesh. His father, Kalimohan Ghosh has worked with Rabindranath Tagore in the rural reconstruction unit at Visva-Bharati, long before Santidev Ghosh was born. Santidev had his school education at the Santiniketan Ashrama Vidyalaya which Tagore had founded in 1901. He learnt the art of dance and music from this institution. He joined Visva-Bharati University as a teacher in 1930, when he was only 20 years old. Later he became Professor and Head of the Department of Rabindra Music and Dance at Sangit-Bhavana, music department.

 

Advisory board member of AIR, Kolkata in 1948, member of the Publication Committee of the Sangeet-Natak Akademi, New Delhi (1956–60) and President of the Music Section of Prabasi Bango Sahitya Sammelan (1964) are other top positions held by Ghosh. To propagate the ideals of Tagore, he has traveled worldwide. Important publications of Ghosh include - Rupakar Nandalal, Bharatiya Gramin Sanskriti, Gurudev Rabindranath O Adhunik Bharatiya Nritya, Nrityakala O Rabindranath and Java O Balir Nrityageet. His autobiography work is Jiboner Dhrubata (The Polestar of Life).
