Santhosh Echikkanam Biography

Santhosh Echikkanam is a popular contemporary writer associated with Malayalam literature.  He writes novels, poems and short stories and many of his works have been adapted to Malayalam silver screen. He has also co-scripted a few Malayalam films like Nidra in 2012. Many of his screenplays have been commercially and critically successful. In 2008 his short story Komala earned him Kerala Sahitya Academy Award in the short story section. He became popular through his short stories which tell tales of common people.

His story – Idukki Gold has been adapted to silver screen by Aashiq Babu with the same title and the movie received positive reviews. He wrote the story and screenplay for highly acclaimed and commercial hit movies like Chandrettan Evideya (2015), Njan Steve Lopez (2014) and Annayum Rasoolum (2013). He also co-scripted the movie, Bachelor Party in 2012 which was a commercial failure. He scripted the television soap – Akashadoodu, the sequel of Malayalam melodrama film – Akashadoodu. He has also scripted several other super hit Malayalam mega serials.

Santhosh hails from Echikkanam of Kasargod district. Echikkanam’s journey as a writer begins from Bedaduka. Born into a rural village, he had to struggle to create an identity of his own. After writing the socio-political satire – Komala in 2008, he established himself as a leading short story writer. Now he is a well-known screenwriter of Malayalam with many commercial hits to his credit.

He resigned his teaching job at a Higher Secondary School in Kasaragod as soon as he was made permanent. He quit the job because he hated the repeated daily routine. He tried hand in journalism after doing a course at the Press Academy in Ernakulam and also a parallel college he started aside his friend. Writing seemed to be the only sensible thing to do and that’s how he turned a full time writer. Komala and Ottavathil are best among his works.
