Sangita Biography

Sangita is a south Indian film actress who was active in the era of 1990’s. She is best known for portraying the lead role of Shyamala in 1997 classic Malayalam movie, directed by Srinivasan, Chinthavishtayaaya Shyamala. She played the role of an anxious middle class wife whose lazy husband is not at all willing to take the responsibilities of the family. The husband’s role was played by Srinivasan himself, who wrote the script and directed the movie was well. The second attempt of Srinivasan as a director, this movie won many state and National awards as well as critics’ appreciation and regarded as a cult classic of mid 1990’s. Through this single movie, Sangita became a household name in Kerala homes and she received Kerala State Film Award for Best Actress and ‘Most Popular Role’ award for this movie. She is equally popular in Tamil movies too, for her breakthrough performance in 1996 movie opposite Vijay, Poove Unakkaga.

 

She entered film industry in the late 1970’s as a child artist. Snehikkan Oru Pennu was her first movie as a child artist. Then she appeared in a series of Malayalam movies like Manju, Vartha, Ennennum Kannettante, Nee Allenkil Njan etc in child artist role. With early 1990’s, she moved to supporting and teenage roles. Vazhndhu Kattuvom in 1990 was her debut Tamil movie. Kadinjool Kalyanam, Neelagiri and Nadodi are her earliest appearances in supporting roles. All these movies were commercial hits too. Samundi, Mahanadi, Vasantha Malargal, Chinna Pasanga Naanga and Devar Veettu Ponnu are her Tamil movies. She appeared in a bit role as Kamal Hassan’s daughter in the climax of critically acclaimed movie, Mahanadi.

 

In 1995, she played parallel lead in Malayalam blockbuster, Aniyan Bava Chetan Bava. Same year she appeared in lead role in two Tamil movies, Ellame En Rasathan and Seethanam. Poove Unakkaga was her big break in Kollywood, followed by Chinthavishtayaya Shyamala in Malayalam which earned her state award for best actress. She appeared in many Tamil and Malayalam movies during late 1990’s in lead roles. After her marriage with cinematographer Saravanan she took break from the industry and later assisted her husband in his debut directorial venture, Silambattam.
