Sangeeth Sivan Biography

Sangeeth Sivan is a popular director of Malayalam and Hindi movies. He is better known as the brother of Santhosh Sivan and the director of all time blockbuster hit of Malayalam – Yoddha (1992), the second movie of A.R. Rahman as a music director. This movie starred Mohanlal and Madhu Bala in leading roles and Urvashi and Jagathy Sreekumar in the supporting roles. Sangeeth Sivan is the son of filmmaker Sivan.

Sangeeth Sivan started his career through Malayalam, and later settled in Bollywood. His directorial debut was Vyooham, released in the year 1990. The movie had Raghuvaran, Sukumaran and Urvashi in the leading roles. The movie was moderate hit too. But it was Yoddha released in 1992 that helped him to achieve stardom. Critics praised him for his direction and technology used and in many terms, it was not less than a Bollywood movie. Its subject, comedy and chemistry between Mohanlal and Jagathy Sreekumar – everything was loved by audience and still it remains as a cult in the decade of 90’s. Another highlight was the music given by A.R.Rahman. Though he is a Malayali by birth, still it remains the only Malayalam movie for which he has composed music. The comedy song, “Padakali” is still remembered for its comic touch and pace of traditional instruments used. Urvashi appeared in both these movies.

His third movie was Daddy with Arvind Swamy, Suresh Gopi and Gouthami playing the lead roles, followed by Gandharvam, Johny, Shilpi and Nirnayam. Sangeeth Sivan and Mohanlal have associated themselves for three movies, namely Yodha, Gandharvam and Nirnayam (Malayalam remake of Criminal) and all were well received too. While the first two gave preference to comedy and action, the third one was a pure action movie.

He entered Bollywood in the year 1997 with the movie Zor, starring Sunny Deol and Sushmita Sen in the leading roles. Except a couple of songs like ‘Tere pyar mein’ and ‘Mein kudi anjani hoon’, the movie was not successful. It was followed by a series of hits and flops. While Chura liya hai tumne, Snehapoornam Anna (Malayalam) and Click failed at box office, Kya kool hain hum, Apna sapna money money and Yamla pagla deewana 2 were successful.
