Sampat Pal Devi Biography

Sampat Pal Devi is a social activist from Bundelkhand region of Uttar Pradesh and founder of the famous women gang for female empowerment and social justice – Gulaabi Gang. The group is kknown for wearing pink saris whenever they conduct some activity related to social justice. 2014 Bollywood movie Gulaabi Gang which witnessed the two stars and arch rivals of 1990s sharing the same screen space together for the first time was inspired from this gang. The much-talked movie starred Madhuri Dixit and Juhi Chawla playing pivot roles. However days before the release of the movie, Sampat pal devi filed a case against the filmmakers to make a movie against her permission. Pal appeared in the reality show – Bigg Boss in 2012, in her usual pink saree.

 

Sampat was married at a very younger age of 12. Her husband belonged to Banda district of UP. Her first move as a woman leader happened at the young age of 16 when she protested against a male resident of her village who used to beat his wife after drinking. When she was threatened by him, she motivated the women of her village to stand against him and she won it as well. The man apologized for his bad act. This small act was the beginning of a big women gang of north India which spread in UP and Madhya Pradesh. The gang included 270,000 members as on 2012.

 

The women members of the group wear pink saris, blue blouses and carry bamboo sticks with them whenever they are active with some action. The group was most active in 2010. Sampat resigned from the post as head in 2012 following some aligations.
