Samir Mondal Biography

Samir Mondal is an artist and painter from West Bengal. Today he is one of the most successful watercolour painters from India. He gained attention through Aamir Khan’s movie, Tare Zameen par (2007), when he painted the portraits of characters Ishaan and Nikumbh, played by Darsheel Safary and Aamir Khan, for the movie. He has received West Bengal State Academy Award twice and AIFACS, New Delhi Award. On the occasion of his 60th birthday, he held an exhibition titled "6x10" of his 60 paintings of flowers, at the Jamaat Art Gallery in Colaba, in March 2012. He created those paintings in 6 months.

 

Mondal was born in Balti, a small village in North 24 Parganas district, West Bengal on March 13, 1952. He graduated in fine arts from the Government College of Art & Craft, Kolkata in 1975 and went to Germany for higher studies. Once he returned, he stayed for a brief time in Bangalore. As an artist, his career started in the year 1980. Same year he got married to Madhumita and stayed in Bangalore for a while. Later the couple got settled in Mumbai. His political cartoons in water colour for noted magazine Illustrated Weekly of India brought him to limelight in 1987. After that he became popular as one of the versatile watercolour painters of modern times.

 

As an artist, he has conducted exhibitions of his art in several cities of India as well as abroad. 100 Years of Indian Cinema, National Art exhibition of Lalit Kala Akademi (Delhi), ‘Freedom of Expression’ and ‘Tribute to Mother Teresa’ by RPG Enterprises are his noted participations in India. Mondal is known for his contribution to Indian art with a continual revival of watercolours over the years since the decade of 1980’s.
