Salil Ankola Biography

Salil Ankola is a former Indian cricketer and Bollywood and television actor. He has acted in a few movies like Kurukshetra, Pitaah and Chura Liya hai tumne before fully switching on to television. Before entering entertainment industry, he was a known face of Indian cricket in the 1990’s and an all-rounder. When legendary cricketer Sachin Tendulkar made his international debut against Pakistan in Karachi in 1989, another Indian cricketer also made his international debut. It’s none other than Ankola! This cricketer has played only that historic Test match, but later played 20 One Day Internationals from 1989 to 1997 for India. Known for good looks, he is one among those well-known cricketers who later reached Bollywood films and television serials. Ankola retired from international cricket at the age of 28.

 

He belongs to Solapur, Maharashtra. He was born in the year 1968. He made his first-class debut for Maharashtra at the age of 20. In this season, he made a hat-trick against Gujarat and was noted for his all-round performance. Overall he performed extra ordinary well in this season, and for his outstanding performance he received a seat in Indian international cricket team. Thus he was selected for the India's tour of Pakistan in 1989–90. He played his debut match against Pakistan in Karachi where he took 2 wickets. He got injured and it prevented him in playing the rest test matches of the series. After that he has never managed to play a test match for India. Though this match is the only international test match played by Ankola, this match is remembered most as the debut match of two great legends of world cricket – Master blaster Sachin Tendulkar and Pakistani Fast bowler Waqar Younis.

 

He made his ODI debut the same season against Pakistan and picked 2 wickets. He played 20 ODI for it picking 13 wickets and scoring 34 runs in total. His last ODI was played against South Africa in 1996-1997 series, in which he gave 50 runs in 7 overs. It was the final match too, where India lost to South Africa. After that he was never called to Indian squad. He declared retirement from all international career very soon.
