Saint Hazrat Mian Mir Biography

Mian Mir is short name of Baba Sain Mir Mohammed Sahib, a Muslim sufi saint who served as the advisor and spiritual instructor of prince Dara Shikoh, the son of Shah Jahan-Mumtaz couple and apparent heir of Mughal empire. His younger sister Bibi Jamal Khatun was a sufi saint.  While instructing his disciples, Mir often refers to the spiritual exercises of his sister as an example, who entered the world of spirituality after 10 years of married life. Mian Mir was a direct descendant of Caliph Umar ibn al-Khattab and he belonged to the Qadiri order of Sufism. He founded Mian Khail branch of the Qadiri order. His name holds a pivotal legendary place in Sikhism and in Sikh history. He is also called Saint Hazrat Mian Mir.

He was born in the year 1550 in Lahore. His great saint appreciated god-loving people a lot and kept himself away from people with selfish thoughts. For the same reason he used to keep his disciples at the gate to get rid of such people. Once his disciples stopped the Emperor Jahangir at the gate, when he told them he is an emperor. Though the emperor was frustrated he was given sensible answer by Mir, and Jahangir repented over his act.

His spiritual contributions have a special space in Sikh history. Guru Arjan Dev, the fifth Sikh Guru has often visited him and his relatives at Lahore. Mian Mir was thirteen years older than Guru Arjan. Yet they became close friends for a long time. Mian Mir was also invited to lay the foundation stone of the Harmandir Sahib, a temple belonging to all groups and communities of people. Saint Hazrat Mian Mir died in 1635.
