Sahir Ludhianvi Biography

Sahir Ludhianvi was a popular lyricist of the golden era of Bollywood music – 50’s to 70’s and has given numerous songs that old song lovers still sing a lot. He was a popular Urdu poet also. His lovely lyrics is still remembered most for the romantic song of 70’s – Kabhi kabhi mere dil mein of movie Kabhi kabhi released in 1977. This year (2013), a postage stamp was released by Pranab Mukherjee on his birth anniversary on March 8. As a lyricist, his best songs belong to Pyaasa, Gumrah, Hurraaz, Hum dono, Naya daur, Kaajal, Naya raastha, Daag, Waqt, Kabhi kabhi, Dhool ka phool, sadhna, Taj Mahal, Barsat ki raat and Chitralekha. His name is always remembered along with another writer Kaifi azmi to bring Urdu literature to celluloid screens.

 

Sahir Ludhianvi was born in a wealthy family in Ludhiana of Punjab. He had a stressed childhood due to the bad relationship between his parents. Divorce between his parents made his financial condition pathetic. He graduated from Khalsa high school Ludhiana. From the college days he was interested in participating in shayaranas and ghazals and a romantic person as well. Throughout his life, he was romantically linked with writer Amrita Preetam and singer Sudha Malhotra. Both these relations ended up with a silent knot and Sahir Ludhianvi was a bachelor throughout his life, dipped in heavy drinking. His intense feeling and broken heart were well shown in his works – both as a lyricist and an Urdu poet.

 

He published his works in a few Urdu magazines and became very popular during his 20’s. He later entered Bollywood music and gave numerous powerful lines to film lovers and most of them belonged to romance category. He finally settled in Mumbai too. As a lyricist, he debut with Azadi Ki Raah Par (1949). But all the four songs went unnoticed. It was Naujawan of 1951 that became popular – Thandi hawaien lahraakke aaye composed by S.D.Burman. Very soon he became an established name of Bollywood.

 

When best lyricist was added to Filmfare, he won a nomination for his song for Sadhana, though couldn’t win it. His other nominations include - Tu Hindu Banega of Dhool ka phool, Chalo Ek Bar Phir Se of Gumraah, Neele gagan ke of Humraaz, Main Pal Do Pal Ka Shayar of Kabhi kabhi and Milti Hai Zindagi Mein of Aankhein. He won it twice – Title track of Kabhi kabhi and Jo wada kiya of Taj Mahal.
