Sadhna Sargam Biography

Sadhna Sargam is a versatile playback singer of modern times. She has sung wonderful songs for Indian languages, particularly Hindi and Tamil. Though she is a Maharastran and started her singing career through Bollywood, she got real appreciation through Tamil movies. A.R.Rehman’s compositions, particularly Alaippayuthey, Kandukondein Kandukondein and Minsara kavanu placed her as one among the best female playback singers of Tollywood.

Sadhna started her musical journey through a Gujarati film, Kangu Pagli during early 80’s. Her first released Bollywood song was Saat saheliyan of Vidhata. It followed a string of hit songs. Har kise ko nahi milta of Jaabaz, Saath samandar and mein tere muhabbat mein of Tridev, Pehla nasha of Jo jeeta wohi Sikandar, Na kajre ki from Mohra, Imli ki bootha from saudagar, Dil ka kya kasoor, jab koi baath bikad jaaye and teri ummed of Deewana are some among the earliest hits of Sadhana. Very soon she became a busy singer of Bollywood, who sang for all leading music directors of the time. Anand Milan, Nadeem Shravan, Laxmikanth Pyarelal, Jatin Lalit and Anu Malik were included in those names.

During the middle 90’s, she slowly migrated to South Indian cinema. She worked with Ilayaraja and A.R.Rehman for a couple of movies. Her decision proved right too. She was warmly welcomed by Tamil music and she began to sing for almost all leading ladies of Tollywood. She won her first National award for best singer for Tamil movie ‘Azhaki’. The classical based song “pattu Solli’ tuned by music maestro Ilayaraja helped her to win this award. Slowly she cemented herself in Tamil music and became an integral part of it. In between she sang for A.R.Rehman for a few Hindi movies too. Jhoola bahon ka of Doli Sajake rakhna was one such.

But the real breakthrough of her career was the smash hit romantic song of Mani ratnam’s Alay payuthe (2000) - Snehithane. She won many awards for this wonderful song too. Two years later, when its Hindi version Saathiya was released with its music replicated, she sang its Hindi version too. Chupke se could repeat the same success as that of its Tamil version. She won star screen awards too.She sung Suno Zara for A.R.Rehman’s Swades too.

A few other hits of Sadhna include Konjum mainakkale of Kandukondein kandukondein (2000) and Swasame of Thenali (2000) of A.R.Rehman’s music. It can be said that year 2000 proved to be the turning point of her musical career, through A.R.Rehman’s tunes. Their hit pair continued to give hits after 2000 too. She sang hit songs for poovellam un vasam, Jeans, Ethiran, Boys and Parthale paravasam , Kuch na kaho title track too.
