S. Srikanta Sastri Biography

S. Srikanta Sastri was an Indian historian, author, Indologist, and polyglot who has authored more than 12 books and 200 articles, apart from many other works. "Hoysala Vastushilpa", "Sources of Karnataka History”, "Geopolitics of India & Greater India”, "Bharatiya Samskruthi" etc are among his major non-fiction works. A great scholar, he was verse in 14 languages including many foreign ones. During 1940-1960 he served as the Head of the Department of History & Indology at Maharaja College, University of Mysore. Kannada Literary Academy award in 1970 and Mythic Society Diamond Jubilee Honour are the major honours received by him.

 

Sastri was born into a family of scholars in Nanjanagud, Karnataka on 5 November 1904. Many of his family members, both from father and mother side, have earned fame as eminent court poets. His uncle Ramshesha Sastri was the first person to translate "Bhagavata" to Kannada language. His cousins have also excelled in the field of journalism and writings. Sastri’s early education was done at Kolar, Nanjanagud and Chikkaballapur before he moved to Mysore for higher studies. He penned his first article titled "Conquests of Siladitya in the South" while he was doing his PG studies at Maharaja College, Mysore. Since then he has contributed some outstanding non-fiction works to the field of history.

 

Sastri authored 12 books, 224 articles and three monographs in different languages (English, Kannada, Hindi, Telugu and Sanskrit). He published his first article at the age of 22. Since 1940s till his death, he has published many research works. He was also a great history teacher who taught during the period, 1926 – 1960 and some of his notable students are R. K. Laxman, R. K. Narayan, G. Venkatasubbaiah, T. V. Venkatachala Sastry, M. Chidananda Murthy, U. R. Ananthamurthy, Chaduranga, Jayachamarajendra Wadiyar etc. he received D. Litt from University of Mysore in 1949.
