S. S. Rajendran Biography

Sedapatti Suryanarayana Devar Rajendran, shortly known as S. S. Rajendran was a film actor, director, producer and politician. He is also known by the name SSR. He was introduced to Tamil cinema through the hit Parasakthi as Sivaji Ganesan’s elder brother, released in 1952. This movie marked the successful debut of both Sivaji and Rajendran. Very soon he became a popular actor and became was a cult figure during 1950’s and 1960’s. Though he didn’t receive stardom similar to Sivaji, Gemini or MGR, Rajendran created his own path and remained a popular hero onscreen. His breath-taking dialogue delivery and for his Dictaphone Tamil pronunciation made him a popular actor of Tamil cinema. He is known for the movies - Sorgavaasal, Ammaiyappan, Thai Piranthaal Vazhi Pirakkum, Ratha Kanneer, Kuladeivam, Kalyanikku Kalyanam and Sivagangai Seemai.

 

S. S. Rajendran was born in 1928 at Sedapatti hamlet near Usilampatti, Madras Presidency. In 1952, he was introduced to Tamil cinema through the hit Parasakthi. Earlier he has been associated with theater work. He joined Puliya Maanagar Boy's Company starting with small roles. Soon he was selected to act as "Bala Abhimanyu". Later he worked with T.K.S. Brothers Drama Company. At the age of 15, he was selected by the troupe to act as the hero Shenbagapandian, replacing Shanmugam. He left T.K.S. Drama Company in 1943 and joined Mohana Gana Sabha in Madras. He lost his first film offer in Abhimanyu, but got opportunity to sing the song "Inba ulakile manmadhan poonganai" in the film Andaal. After that Rajendran started his own drama company and entered acting field.

 

 He has worked with Sivaji Ganesan in movies like Manohara, Rangoon Radha, Raja Rani, Deiva Piravi, Aalayamani, Pachai Vilakku, Kai Kodutha Dheivam, Pazhani and Shanthi. Raja Desingu as Mohamed Khan and in Kaanji Thalaivan as Paranjothi are his memorable roles in MGR movies. SSR was honoured with Thyagaraja Bhagavathar Award by Tamil Nadu State Government, 1999. He joined the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) party and has contested from Theni constituency in the assembly election. But he lost the seat. In 1981 Assembly elections, he won as AIADMK candidate from Andipatti constituency. Now he has retired from politics.
