S. S. Chandran Biography

S. S. Chandran was a comedian turned politician from Tamil Nadu. Former AIADMK MP, he has entertained Tamil audience through his character roles in Thiruda Thiruda (1994), Poovum Puyalum (1988) and Unakkaga Ellam Unakkaga (1999) towards the end of his acting career. Later he joined politics and served as a member of Rajya Sabha from Tamil Nadu, representing AIADMK. He died on October 8, 2010 in Mannargudi, Thiruvarur aged 69 following a cardiac arrest. Started his acting career at the age of 15, he has essayed around 800 films, predominantly in the Tamil language.

 

Chandran was born in the year 1941. He started his acting career at the age of 15 with stage plays and later moved to celluloid.  Associated with several theatre troupes during his first phase of acting career, he has performed across Tamil Nadu and a few shows in Sri Lanka too. As a character artist he has worked in more than 700 Tamil movies. Thangamani Rangamani, Sahadevan Mahadevan, Paati Sollai Thattathey, and Kathanayagan are among his popular roles. He also produced four Tamil films.

 

He was active in the film scene till late 1990s and switched to politics with the early 2000s. Seeri Varum Kaalai and Ninaikkadha Naalillai were among his latest releases and Poruthiru was released in 2011 posthumously. He served as a Rajya Sabha MP from 2001- 2007 representing Jayalalithaa lead AIADMK. He was replaced later on health grounds. He had undergone a bypass surgery one year before his death. He served as the deputy secretary of AIADMK at the time of his death. He was married and had three children. His son Rohit is an actor.
