S. Guptan Nair Biography

Professor S. Guptan Nair was a famous writer, critic, scholar, orator and educationist from Kerala. He served as University Grants Commission (UGC) professor in several Government colleges and retired as Head of the Department of Malayalam from Calicut University. He is regarded as one of the earliest and prominent film historians and critic aside noted film journalist, Chelangatt Gopalakrishnan. `Isangalkappuram,' `Kranthadarsikal,' Srishtiyum Srishtavum', `Tagore,' and `Asthiyude Pookkal: Changampuzha — Kaviyum Kavithayum are his noted works. His essays have been a part of academic syllabus of Kerala. He was conferred with the Ezhuthachan Puraskaram – the highest honour given to Malayalam literature in 2005, for his overall contributions. Kendra Sahithya Academy Award, Kerala Sahithya Academy Award, Vallathol Puraskaram, Lalithambika Antharjanam Award and Shankara Narayanan Thampi Award are other major awards received by him.

 

S. Guptan Nair was born on 22 August 1919 at Oachira near Kayamkulam. He passed out with BA Honours from Government Arts College in 1941 and started his career as a Malayalam lecturer in University College in 1945. After serving several colleges and university, he retired as Head of the Department of Malayalam from Calicut University. He was a multi-faceted personality with interests of music, acting and sports. He received the Kerala Sahithya Akademi award in 1966, the Kendra Sahithya Akademi award in 1984, and the Vayalar award in 1998. His simple and lucid writing style made him a popular Malayalam writer. Manasasmarami – an autobiographical work is his last published work.

 

Professor Guptan Nair is known as an eminent teacher and as an essayist his works have been included in school and college syllabuses. He has presided over the Education Protection Forum which led a campaign against student politics. He died in 2006, and Guptan Nair Award was established the following year by S. Guptan Nair Foundation.
