Rusi Modi Biography

Rusi Modi was one of the early cricketers of Indian cricket. His full name is Rustomji Sheriyar 'Rusi' Modi. He was an excellent batsman who played in Indian National Cricket Team from 1946 to 1952. He made his test debut in 1946 in Lords against England and since then played 10 matches for team India. He also played 105 first class matches at a batting average of 53.02 runs. He accumulated 7529 runs in first class matches, apart from 32 runs. His highest score is 245 not out. He played 10 test matches with a batting average of 46. He scored a total of 736 runs in test matches. He grabbed a five-wicket haul in his first class cricket career though he was known as a batsman.

 

Modi was born on 11 November 1924 in Mumbai. He started his cricket journey at the age of 17 playing for Mumbai in a Bombay Pentangular match. He played an outstanding game during 1943/44 and 1944/45 Ranji season. He scored 5 successive centuries for Mumbai team, and seven in the following season. He made a record of 1008 runs in five Ranji matches in 1944-45 season, a record that stood for 40 long years. Though he made his test debut he was active in FC cricket also. He played domestic cricket as a member of Mumbai team till 1957-1958 season.

 

After retirement from cricket he was fully engaged. Since 1964 he authored many books on cricket. Cricket Forever – was his first published book. He served as the ADC to the Bombay Governor and also as an executive in the Associated Cement Company. Modi was also a table tennis player who has represented Maharashtra in inter-state matches. He passed away in 1996 following a cardiac arrest.
