Rushyendramani Biography

Rushyendramani was a singer actress associated with south Indian film industry during the first generation of movies. In a career spanning to more than 50 years during the period 1930s to 1980s, she has appeared in all south Indian language films apart from a few Hindi movies. She has appeared in over 150 movies. Seeta Rama Jananam, Malliswari, Vipra Narayana, Maya Bazar, Jagadeka Veeruni Katha, Aggi Ramudu, Sri Krishna Satya, Panduranga Mahatyam, Patni and Sri Krishna Tulabharam are some of her noted films. She was a trained classical dancer and singer. She was married to Javvadi RamaKrishna Rao. She started her acting career as a child artist on stage.

 

She was born in Vijayawada on 1 January 1917. She learnt classical music and dance forms at a young age. She received formal training in Kuchipudi and Bharatnatyam which helped her a lot in the acting career later. She has been a stage artist since the age of 7. She later joined the theater troupe - Lakshmi Vilasa Nataka Sabha and appeared in the plays - Chintamani and Savitri. Srikrishna Tulabaram produced by Rajarao Naidu in 1935 was her debut film where she enacted the role of Satyabhama. The movie met with a commercial failure though her acting and singing talents were noticed and praised.

 

She joined Rajarajeswari Natya Mandali of Kadaru Nagabhushanam and Pasupuleti Kannamba which did extensive stage shows across the country. Prabhavati in Rangoon Rowdi and Narada in Savitri were her noted roles as a stage actress. She got married to Javvadi RamaKrishna Rao Naidu, a music composer of Telugu theater. She played Kannagi in 1942 movie – Patni, which was her major breakthrough and established her as a leading actress. She got numerous awards for her singing talent too. She has worked with her granddaughter Bhavani in 1974 film - "Bhootayya ne magha ayyu", which earned her a supporting actress award.
