Rupini Biography

Rupini is a south Indian actress who has been active in the silver screen during late 1980’s and early 1990’s. She has been active in Tamil, Kannada and Malayalam movies and has played lead role opposite big south Indian stars like Mammootty, Mohanlal, Rajinikanth, Kamal Hassan, Mohan and Vishnuvardhan. Though she is originally from Mumbai, she was most active in south Indian film industry. Yet she has also acted in a few Bollywood movies. Playing a child artist role in Hrishikesh Mukherjee’s Mili in 1975 was her first onscreen experience.

She was born on January 16, 1958 in Mumbai, Maharashtra. Her real name is Komal Mahuvakar. But both her parents originally belonged to Kerala, though settled in Maharashtra. Her father is a lawyer and mother, a doctor. She started formal training in Indian classical dance forms at the age of 4. She started learning from famous Lachhu Maharaj in Mumbai. She learnt Bharathanatyam, Kuchipudi, Odissi and Kathak in a short span of time. She was accidentally spotted by film director Hrishikesh Mukherjee. Thus she appeared as a child artist in Amitabh Bachchan – Jaya Bhaduri starrer – Mili in 1975. As a child artist, she has appeared in Bollywood movies like Des Pardes, Kotwal Saab, Saanch Ko Aanch Nahin and Khubsurat.

Her first lead role was for the Hindi movie, Payal Ki Jhankaar (1980) which was India’s official entry for the Best Foreign Language Film at the 53rd Academy Awards. She was paired opposite Alankar Joshi in this movie. Then she appeared in many Bollywood movies like 'Meri Adalat', Nagina, Chameli Ki Shaadi, 'Sanch Ko Aanch Nahin' and 'Nache Mayuri'. She debut south Indian screen with blockbuster hit - Manithan (1989) opposite Rajinikanth. Naduvazhikal, Midhya, Kunukkitta Kozhi, Nadody and Bandhukkal Shathrukkal are her Malayalam movies.
