Rubina Ali Biography

Rubina Ali is a child artist who shot to fame after playing child version of Latika in the Oscar-winning film Slumdog Millionaire (2008). Rubina is a recipient of the 15th Screen Actors Guild Award for 'Outstanding Performance by a Cast in a Motion Picture', for being a member of the cast of that film. She was nominated at Black Reel Awards of 2008 – Best Ensemble for Slumdog Millionaire. She was later seen in the Bollywood film - Kal Kisne Dekha (2009) and a documentary film - La Alfombra Roja, shot in English and Hindi.

Rubina lived in the slums of Mumbai. She lived in Garib Nagar slum near Bandra station. Her parents are divorced and she lived with her father, stepmother and brother. Her mother remarried a Hindu and settled with family life. She was offered to play young Latika in Slumdog Millionaire (2008) which changed her life forever. Before she was casted to the movie, debates were made if real slum kids should be employed for the movie. Critics even claimed that Rubina and her co-star Azharuddin Mohammed Ismail had been underpaid for the pivot roles they played in the movie. She and the slums where she lived came to limelight after the movie became a huge success winning several prestigious awards. Maharashtra Housing Area Development Authority recommended the children be rehoused.

The movie changed Rubina’s life forever and she, along with Azharuddin Mohammed Ismail gained global attention. Rubina got media attention and later she and her family were rehoused in her own flat in the Bandra West suburb of Mumbai. She attended the 81st Academy Awards on 22 February 2009 and it was for the first time she visited a place outside Mumbai. She, along with Azharuddin Mohammed Ismail were casted in Bollywood film - Kal Kisne Dekha.
